ABOUT CATOCTIN BAHÁ'Í ECO CAMP

IMG_2306.jpg

The Catoctin Baha'i Eco Camp experience is designed for people of all ages - children, junior youth, youth, and parents.  It provides a choice learning environment from which participants learn about ecological principles, experience the natural habitat of the Catoctin area, and learn about spiritual principles related to ecology and conservation.  It also provides an environment in which participants as are able to socialize in a natural, spiritually uplifting setting with their peers.

Catoctin Quaker Camp, which is rented for this Baha'i ecology camp, is nestled in the mountains of Thurmont, MD (Frederick County).  It sits on over 400 acres of wooded land consisting of walkable trails, streams, grassy areas, and a natural pond safe for canoeing and swimming.

Catoctin Bahá'í Eco Camp is open to Bahá’ís, their friends, and the community of interest. Children under age 11 (typically those entering 5th grade and younger) must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.  Age-appropriate ecology-centered classes and activities will be offered for toddlers through 5th graders; toddlers must be accompanied by at least one parent throughout the day.  Junior Youth (typically those entering 6th through 9th grades), participate in their own activities.  Adults will have a program, but are also invited to offer their services for various needs such as cooking and kitchen duties, plus supervising children and youth while they perform camp/ecology-related acts of service during the weekend. Youth, age 15 and up, are typically involved in running classes and activities, for which they must attend planning meetings held prior to camp. Youth should contact the camp committee if they are interested; they must have successfully completed Ruhi Books 1 and 3, and optionally, Book 5, by the end of July to serve on the counseling staff. Exceptions can be made and the registrar should be contacted.

Our Mission

The camp environment at Catoctin, although well-structured, is intentionally informal.  Everyone is living, working, learning, and playing together, which provides a special opportunity for close friendships to form.  The camp also provides an opportunity for spiritual communion in a beautiful, natural environment.  Study and activities are geared toward specific topics of spiritual perception and stewardship relating to the environment.  It is our hope that joyful camp experiences and a serious commitment to the environment will be carried in attendees' hearts for a lifetime.

Camp Themes

The theme is different each year.  Lessons and activities for the camp will be coordinated by local Bahá’í youth and adults who are well-trained and experienced at leading children's and junior youth activities.  Camp activities will consist of lessons, prayers, meditation, lots of games, craft projects, songs, a service project, a campfire every night, chores, swimming, canoeing, and supervised free time.  The curriculum used for lessons is Bahá’í-inspired.  It teaches universal virtues and is woven in with ecology activities.
